Executive Leadership
David Armstrong, Producing Artistic Director
Since joining The 5th Avenue Theatre in 2000, David Armstrong has directed acclaimed productions of Mame, Sweeney Todd, Hair, A Little Night Music, The Secret Garden, Company, The Rocky Horror Show, Pippin, Yankee Doodle Dandy!, and Anything Goes. His direction and choreography has been seen in New York, Los Angeles and at many leading regional theaters across the country including The Kennedy Center, The Ordway Center, Cincinnati Playhouse, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, St. Louis Rep, Sacramento Music Circus, Ford's Theater and the Paper Mill Playhouse.
Since coming to The 5th Avenue Mr. Armstrong has helped to establish this theatre as a nationally recognized
producer and developer of new musicals including the world premiere
productions of Hairspray, The Wedding Singer, Princesses, Shrek and
Memphis. As a playwright, Mr. Armstrong created the book for The 5th's world premiere musical Yankee Doodle Dandy, and was commissioned by
Theatreworks/USA to create the books for two musicals - Gold Rush! which premiered at New York's Kaye Playhouse and has been touring for more than 11 years, and a new version of A Christmas Carol that has toured for 10 seasons and played Off-Broadway at New York's Lucille Lortel Theatre. The Cole Porter revue, Hot N' Cole, which Mr. Armstrong devised and directed, has been produced by scores of theaters throughout America.
Marilynn Sheldon, Managing Director
Marilynn Sheldon has been with The 5th Avenue Theatre since 1980, bringing more than 125 exquisite productions to the stage. She is committed to preserving the Theatre’s heritage and its status as a historic treasure. Ms. Sheldon is equally dedicated to the continuing development of the American musical.
In her role as managing director, she was instrumental in establishing The 5th Avenue Musical Theatre Company, a resident, non-profit theater group that brings local musicals to life. She also helped develop the Adventure Musical Theatre Touring Company, which presents original shows to kindergarten and elementary-school students in Washington State.
Ms. Sheldon has served on the board of several arts organizations, and is currently a member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the League of American Theatres and Producers, Independent Presenters Network, and Washington State Arts Alliance. She is also active in the Rotary Club of Seattle and CityClub.
