For Broadway-bound youth, The 5th Avenue Theatre offers Saturday morning classes in ballet, jazz and tap. Whether you're just starting out, or well on your way to the Great White Way, you'll find a class to fit your needs. All classes taught by professional dancers and choreographers.
NEW MUSIC, SONG AND DANCE CLASSES FOR CHILDREN!
| I've Got Rhythm! (4-5 years old) |
Come to the 5th for a session of exploration in music and rhythm! Whether your child loves to beat the drum or sing like a star, this class is for them. Children will learn several songs and activities they will be able to take home to their family and friends for hours of musical fun! The activities in this class will be geared towards developing music skills and self-confidence on-stage and off. |
| I've Got Music! (ages 6-8 years old) |
Take a trip to Broadway at the 5th Avenue Theatre! Come see what musical theatre is all about and how to get a start in this crazy biz! From silly vocal warm-ups to audition tips, the possibilities are endless in this class that will be geared toward each individual member all while adding a few great songs to their repertoire. Each child will even have a chance to sing solo for their classmates if they feel ready! All young singers welcome at all levels of experience. |
| Creative Movement (for ages 4-5) |
Students will begin by practicing skills such as taking turns, maintaining focus, and following directions. Classes will include stretching, games, songs, and activities designed to teach kids how to move their bodies expressively to music to convey different characters, emotions, and animals. |
| A Dance Sampler (for ages 6-8) |
Students will learn basic ballet and jazz technique and how to incorporate that into acting through dance and movement. Classes will include stretching, learning and practicing basic steps, games designed to encourage students to convey different characters and emotions with their bodies, and short pieces of choreography. |

TWEEN AND TEEN DANCE CLASSES
| Intro to Musical Theater Dance (ages 9-13) |
This is a mixed level class that introduces musical theater dance to young students. Emphasis will be on ballet and jazz techniques and will combine barre, center work and basic dance combinations from musicals. Jazz or ballet shoes required. |
| Ballet for Musical Theater (ages 13-18) |
This is a mixed level ballet class that introduces students to ballet fundamentals including vocabulary, body alignment, positions of the feet and arms and the essential skills for executing musical theater dance styles. Students will learn through barre, center work and basic combinations that include turns, jumps and leaps and focus on strength, flexibility, articulation and training the body to find correct alignment. Ballet shoes required. |
| Jazz for Musical Theater (ages 13-18) |
This is a mixed level jazz class that provides students with the tools necessary to increase flexibility and strengthen the core. Students will learn essential theater dance steps, the fundamentals of turns and jumps, and a foundation for partnering. Every few weeks, students will learn a new dance combination introducing a different style, genre or era of dance. Students are encouraged to explore acting through dance while working on movement, dancing with strength, and "selling" a dance number. Jazz shoes required. |
| Beginning Tap for Musical Theater (ages 13-18) |
This class is designed for the beginning tap student, or students looking for a refresher course on the basics of tap dance. Students will learn tap techniques from the first step through the basic steps that any tap dancer must know including shuffle, flap, cramp-roll, riff, pullbacks, and wings. Class will focus on introducing the basics and learning beginning tap dance combinations. Tap shoes required. |
| Intermediate/Advanced Tap for Musical Theater (ages 13-18) |
This class is designed for the more advanced tap student. Students will practice basic tap steps while learning essential skills that include transition steps and combinations such as flap-ball-change, waltz clog, maxi ford, shim sham, time steps, etc. Focus will be on presentation and musicality and students will learn essential tap dance skills to prepare for auditions. Tap shoes required. |
Fall Session: Saturdays, September 11 – November 13, 2010
Intro to Musical Theater Dance (ages 9-13): 9:30-10:40am
Ballet for Musical Theater (ages 13-18): 10:50am-12:00pm
Jazz for Musical Theater (ages 13-18): 12:10pm- 1:20pm
Int./Adv. Tap for Musical Theater (ages 13-18): 1:30pm-2:40pm
Beginning Tap (ages 13-18): 2:50pm-4:00pm
Classes held at The 5th Avenue Theatre, with the exception of the classes on November 6 and 13 which will be held at Theatre Puget Sound at the Seattle Center.
