“How to Audition for Musical Theatre” – May 7

SEATTLE - The 5th Avenue Theatre will hold 2007-2008 season auditions for principal singers, actors and ensemble singers on Tuesday, June 19 through Sunday, June 24 from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. Open auditions for experienced dancers who sing will be held on Tuesday, June 12 and Thursday, June 14 from 1-4 p.m. at The 5th Avenue Theatre. Adult performers over the age of 18 with professional musical theater experience are sought for principal, supporting, and ensemble roles in INTO THE WOODS, CABARET, and MAME.

To assist performers in the audition process, David Armstrong, Producing Artistic Director, and Bill Berry, Associate Artistic Director and Casting Director, will lead a workshop: “How to Audition for Musical Theater” on Monday, May 7 from 7-10 p.m. at Theatre Puget Sound, Center House Theatre (1st floor). The three-hour workshop will focus on the ten things actors desperately need to know for effective musical theater auditions in New York City or Seattle. Anyone attending this workshop will have the opportunity to sign up for a general audition appointment. The workshop is designed for all levels of professional performers. The cost is $15 per person, and all proceeds will benefit The 5th Avenue Theatre’s Education Programs. Workshop attendees must register in advance. Call (206) 625-1418 to register and for more information. Auditions for children’s roles will be held at a date to be determined. Children shouldn’t attend these auditions.

Auditions for principal actor/singers and ensemble singers for June 19-24 are by appointment only. Qualified performers must schedule an audition appointment by calling the audition hotline at (206) 625-1418 beginning May 14, 2006 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Any actor/singer who appeared on The 5th Avenue Theatre’s stage during the past 2006-2007 season should not attend these auditions, but are encouraged to attend the audition workshop.

Auditions for experienced dancers who sing will be held Tuesday, June 12 and Thursday, June 14 from 1-4 p.m. at The 5th Avenue Theatre. They only need to attend one of these dance calls. Adult performers over the age of 18 with professional musical theater dance experience are sought for ensemble roles in CABARET and MAME. “Singers who move” should not attend this call. Dancers must register in advance by calling (206) 625-1418 beginning May 14, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. All performers who wish to be considered as a dancer must attend these auditions, even if you appeared on The 5th Avenue Theatre’s stage during the 2006-2007 season. Dancers should come to the audition dressed to dance and must be prepared to follow combination steps under the choreographer’s direction. Advanced backgrounds in jazz and ballet are required. Dancers should be prepared to sing and bring sheet music in their correct key. No separate audition appointment is needed. An accompanist will be provided.

The 5th Avenue Theatre values diversity in all areas of its operations, welcoming and encouraging auditions from people of all ethnic and cultural groups. We are dedicated to nurturing talent and hiring locally. All local and regional Equity and non-Equity actors, singers, and dancers are encouraged to audition for the 2007-2008 5th Avenue season.

All auditioners must bring a resume and a recent 8x10 headshot, which will not be returned. Additionally, all auditioners should bring sheet music in their correct key for two stylistically different songs that demonstrate vocal ability, acting ability, and stage presence. Selections should be no more than one verse and one chorus in length. Short is good. An accompanist will be provided. Taped accompaniment or singing a cappella will not be permitted.

Performances run: INTO THE WOODS (February 5 - 24, 2008), CABARET (April 8 - 27, 2008), and MAME (May 27 - June 15, 2008). Rehearsals begin approximately four weeks before each opening. CABARET is a joint production with American Musical Theatre of San Jose and St. Paul’s Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, so rehearsals will begin in early February. Actors must be available for daytime rehearsals.

Callbacks will be scheduled on dates appropriate to each production. For further information, or to schedule an audition, call the audition hotline at (206) 625-1418, beginning May 14, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
