Damn Yankees
Apr 21 – May 20, 2012
This rousing Adler and Ross musical comedy about America’s favorite pastime knocks it out of the park when a bewitching seductress and Satan himself test how far Joe will go so his beloved baseball team can win the pennant.
Music and Lyrics: Richard Adler and Jerry Ross
Book: George Abbott and Douglas Wallop
Adapted from Wallop's 1954 novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant
Director: Mark Hoebee
Media Response to Damn Yankees
"The 5th Avenue Theatre is offering a colorful, boisterous production of this joyously retro romp."
"[Damn Yankees] Has heart to spare combined with a killer cast and visually spectacular set."
"The music is tuneful, the choreography (by Denis Jones after Bob Fosse’s original) sparkling."
"The choreography sizzles, the performances delight and the comic timing is polished and precise."
"You don't have to be a baseball fan to love Damn Yankees at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre, but you might become one just by buying a ticket. Get yours now, before this fun, funny, and sometimes touching musical sells out or ends its April 21-May 20 run"

Damn Yankees, a classic American musical, is a modern version of the story of Faust, the legendary sorcerer who sold his soul to Mephistopheles in exchange for magical powers. Set in the 1950s, this tale focuses on Joe, a devoted baseball fan in his forties, and a mysterious figure who calls himself "Applegate." Applegate has an irresistible offer for Joe: he can be twenty-two again, join his favorite team, the Washington Senators, and become a hero by helping the Senators beat a team that then seemed invincible—the New York Yankees. Joe agrees to leave his wife and home behind, but he insists on an escape clause so that he can return.
Adult Language
Very mild, only a few "hells" and "damns."
Violence
Lola tells a story about a man she seduced (on Applegate's orders) who embezzled money, lost his wife, took to drink, and finally, when she left him, jumped out a twenty-second-story window.
Sexual References
These are very mild and consist of innuendoes. Applegate enlists his assistant, Lola, to seduce Joe, who misses his wife. Despite her best efforts, Joe tells her "I wish I was two people, but I'm only one – and I'm married." Later, when Joe believes he is trapped and can never go home, he and Lola will briefly dance, kiss, and embrace during the song "Two Lost Souls."
The Washington Senators sing about the strict rules they live by during the season: no late hours, no drinking, and no women. Three players tell stories about intimate encounters with women that go nowhere because each man realizes he must remain devoted to the game. Sample lyric:
"Man, her perfume sure did smell sweet / Got her up to my hotel suite / She killed a pint of gin more or less / The lights were low, she slips off her dress / But then I thought about the game! / The game! The game! / Yes, I thought about the game! / The game! The game! / Though I got the lady high / I just left her high and dry / 'Cause I thought about the game!"
Drugs/Alcohol
Applegate is seen smoking a cigarette. Applegate's assistant, Lola, gives him a glass of "demon rum," but she sneaks in four pills to make him sleep. Lola and Joe drink and dance together as they sing, "Two Lost Souls."

RICHARD ADLER & JERRY ROSS (Music/Lyrics)
were born in New York City in 1921 and 1926. Adler and Ross met in 1950 and together they were mentored by Frank Loesser (Guys and Dolls). From then on they worked closely together and both took credit for their music and lyrics. The team began their career with the revue John Murray Anderson's Almanac, for which they contributed most of the songs. Their second show, The Pajama Game, opened in May 1954 and was a popular and critical success, winning several Tony Awards. Opening a year later, Damn Yankees repeated the success of The Pajama Game. Both shows ran on Broadway for more than 1,000 performances. The two saw more than a half-dozen of their songs reach the US Top Ten, two of them peaking at number one. Their partnership was cut short when Ross died in 1955 at the age of 29. Adler continued to write both alone and with other partners.
JOHN DOUGLASS WALLOP III (Book)
was born in 1920 and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1942. In 1949, he married writer and actress Lucille Fletcher and they remained together until his death. Wallop was a devoted (though frustrated) fan of the Washington Senators. He authored 13 books, but The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant (1954), which he adapted with George Abbott into Damn Yankees, is his most famous.
GEORGE ABBOTT (Book)
was a true Broadway legend. During a career that spanned nine decades, Mister Abbott (as he was always addressed) directed, produced, and/or wrote over 120 plays — one-third of them musicals. Among his shows are some of the biggest hits of the 20th century, including The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, A Funny Thing…Forum, On Your Toes, Call Me Madam, Once Upon a Mattress, Wonderful Town, and Pal Joey. He kept young by working with new talent such as Adler and Ross, the songwriters of Damn Yankees. He was still actively working when he died in 1995, at the age of 107.
MARK S. HOEBEE (Director)
is the producing artistic director at Paper Mill Playhouse. On Broadway, he directed the Actors Fund Benefit of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. Directing credits at Paper Mill include Dreamgirls, Hello Dolly! starring Tovah Feldshuh, Harold and Maude: The Musical with Estelle Parsons, The King & I, Miss Saigon, Disney’s High School Musical, Peter Pan, and The Full Monty starring Broadway legend Elaine Stritch. Under his leadership and working alongside Cameron Mackintosh, Paper Mill launched the American premiere of the 25th Anniversary production of Les Misérables and, with Disney Theatrical Productions, was home to the world premiere of Newsies.
