Gift of Stock
Reduce your capital gains taxes by gifting a highly appreciated security at its present market value to The 5th Avenue Theatre. Every year many of our patrons take advantage of the simplicity and tax advantages of donating shares of stock to the Theatre. Here are a few things to know:
- Transferring Stocks Electronically
The simplest way to donate publicly traded stocks to the 5th Avenue Theatre is to have your broker transfer shares electronically to the Theatre's account.
Once you’ve made the decision to transfer stock to the Theatre, we ask that you fill out a Stock Donation Notification form, or simply call the Theatre's Development Office at (206) 625-1418 to inform us that you have authorized a stock transfer.
This step is VERY IMPORTANT. Unless we know that the transfer is occurring, we have no way to match your donation with the stock. Your name does not transfer with the stock. Delays occur over which we have no control. So, please contact us when you make the transfer.
The Theatre’s policy is to credit your donor account for the value of the stock using the average price on the day that your stock donation is received into the 5th Avenue Theatre’s account. We make every effort to sell the stock immediately upon receipt.
For your income tax purposes, your donation is completed on the day your broker transfers it to the Theatre’s account. Thus, you should always consult your tax advisor: 1.) Regarding the actual amount of your deduction and 2.) The date of the contribution.
- Donating Stock in Certificate Form
If the stock you wish to donate is in certificate form, you may deliver the certificates in person to the 5th Avenue Theatre administrative offices (The Skinner Building, 1308 5th Avenue, Suite 735, Seattle, WA 98101) during normal business hours: 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday. If you would rather not deliver your stock certificates in person, please call the Theatre’s Development Office at (206) 625-1418 to make other arrangements that better accommodate your schedule.
Stock certificates should be registered in the name of the 5th Avenue Theatre or, if the certificates are in your name, should be accompanied by a signed Security Release and a signed Stock Power (both are available from your broker or at the 5th Avenue Theatre). Please sign these exactly as the name on the certificate reads.
We thank you in advance for your consideration of this generous and tax advantageous gift to the Theatre. Please don’t hesitate to contact Kerry O’ Keefe at the 5th Avenue’s Development Office (206) 625-1418, or for more details.
