The multi-Tony Award®-winning Cole Porter masterpiece that set the standard for great musicals and then broke the mold! Inspired by the real life story of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the undisputed king and queen of Broadway legend from the 1920s to the 1950s. This sparkling sensation is, at its core, a true battle of the sexes. A charming leading man and his superstar ex-wife are starring in a production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. As they swing from love to loathing and back again, their behind-the-scenes battles spill on to the stage and shine a bright light on long-standing historic issues of gender inequality.   

Kiss Me, Kate is a fantastic evening of amazing entertainment, celebrated music, fabulous dance, great performances, and a little something more to tell us about how far we have come and how far we still have to go.

Running Time

Arrival Time

Productions begin promptly, so please arrive at least 15 minutes early. Doors open 45 minutes before the show and seating begins 30 minutes before the curtain.

Late Seating

Patrons arriving late will be seated at the first suitable pause in the performance in the least disruptive location. Following intermission, an usher will help you find your seat.


All performances will take place as scheduled, regardless of weather conditions.


The 5th Avenue Theatre welcomes children ages 4 and older. Children under 4 years of age, including babes in arms, will not be admitted.

Coat Check, Assistive Devices, and Special Needs

Complimentary Coat Check is located in the lobby next to Aisle 3. You may check any item you don’t wish to carry into the theater. Booster seats, assistive listening headsets, and Braille playbills are available at no charge. Binoculars may be rented for $5.00.

Food & Drinks

Refreshments are available for purchase on both levels of the lobby before the performance and during intermission. Candy and beverages purchased at the lobby concession stand may be brought into the theatre. Beverages must be in a bottle with cap or a theater cup with lid. 

Ticket Refunds & Exchanges

You may exchange your tickets if you do so 24 hours or more prior to your scheduled performance date. Subscribers may exchange tickets with no exchange fee. Single-ticket buyers are charged an exchange fee. Please note: Tickets are non-refundable.

You may also donate your tickets back to the non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre. The 5th cannot guarantee that ticket donations are tax deductable and does not produce tax receipts for these donations. Please call 206.625.1900 prior to your performance  to arrange a ticket donation.

Lost Tickets

If you lose or forget your tickets, please call 206-625-1900 or 888-5TH-4TIX for a replacement. You may pick up your tickets at the Box Office on the day of the show.

Third-Party Tickets

We strongly discourage patrons from purchasing tickets through outside vendors. Tickets bought from scalpers, brokers or by other third-party means may be counterfeit or inadmissible, and they are often grossly overpriced. These purchases do not benefit the performers, producers or The 5th Avenue Theatre. Purchasing directly from the 5th Avenue Theatre is your best bet for best seats and best available prices.

Cameras & Recorders

The use of cameras and video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. You may leave these items at the Coat Check.

Smoking Policy

Smoking is not allowed in any part of the theater nor within 25 feet of the theater entrance.

Firearms Policy

No firearms of any kind are allowed in any part of the theater.

Kiss Me, Kate a classic musical with a score by the great Cole Porter, tells the story of the backstage romances, quarrels, and rivalries of a theatre troupe performing a revised version of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Adult Language:

The language is quite mild; Lilli, the leading lady, calls her leading man Fred (from whom she is divorced) a “bastard” a couple of times. There are a couple of “hells” and one “Goddamned” and the word “whoreson” is used as part of the Shakespeare play within the play.


Sexual References:

The actors in the play-within-a-play are lounging backstage during the “Too Darn Hot” number are kissing and flirting throughout.

When Kate and Petruchio first meet, a fight breaks out (Lilli, who is playing Kate, is furious with Fred); Petruchio grabs Kate’s wrists and inadvertently falls on top of her as he tries to restrain her, in a movement that could (briefly) be called suggestive.  While singing “I Hate Men,” Kate takes a few hostile (and suggestive) bites from a banana.

The city of Parma is referred to as a “heartless, tartless menace” in the song “We Open in Venice.” 

Almost all of the sexual references are implied rather than explicit; Lois, in her song, “Always True to You (In My Fashion),” admits that she occasionally strays in her relationship with Bill (“I could never curl my lip / To a dazzlin’ diamond clip / Though the clip meant ‘Let ‘er rip,’ I’d not say nay”). The gangsters’ song, “Brush Up Your Shakespeare,” and the backstage song, “Too Darn Hot” (“I’d like to fool with my baby tonight / Break ev’ry rule with my baby tonight / But, pillow, you’ll be my baby tonight / ’Cause it’s too darn hot”) are full of such double entendres.



Several of the characters smoke onstage, and the smell and smoke has been an irritant to some audience members.

Several of the songs make references to alcohol. Bill has furs, a hat, champagne, and beer delivered to Lois’s dressing room.



Lilli and Fred quarrel onstage while playing Katharine and Petruchio: she hits him, bites him, and slaps him several times; he spanks her; later she slaps him again. Both Katharine and Petruchio throw objects at each other.

The gangsters are carrying guns and quietly threaten both Lilli and Fred. They leave without carrying out any of these threats when they learn that their boss’s “unidentified remains will be found floating in the bay tomorrow morning.”
